2. Preterite Tense (Simple Past)

The preterite tense is used to describe actions completed in the past.

2.1. Regular Verbs

  • -er and -ir have the same endings, all using an i
    • -ar and -ir nosotros verbs are the same in present and past

2.2. Irregular Verbs

Some verbs are irregular in the preterite tense and do not follow standard conjugation patterns.

There are four main categories of irregular verbs in the preterite tense:

  1. ser and ir
  2. the vowels in the stem change (only for 3rd person singular and plural)
  3. the entire stem changes
  4. minor changes in spelling for pronunciation (add y, add u, z -> c)

2.2.1. Ser and Ir

These verbs share the same conjugation in the preterite tense.

2.2.2. Stem vowel change

  • An –ir verb that stem changes in the present tense will stem change in the preterite but only in the third person form
  • Only -ir verbs change their stem vowel in past tense

2.2.3. Entire stem changes

There are many verbs where the entire stem changes for every conjugation in preterite. The endings are the same for all of them.
