5. Conditional Tense

The conditional tense expresses what you would do under certain circumstances.

5.1. Formation

For all verbs, attach the conditional endings to the infinitive form.

Conditional Endings:

PronounEnding
Yo-ía
Vos-ías
Él/Ella/Usted-ía
Nosotros-íamos
Ellos/Ustedes-ían

Example Verbs:

  • Hablar (to speak)
    • Vos hablarías
  • Comer (to eat)
    • Vos comerías
  • Vivir (to live)
    • Vos vivirías

5.2. Irregular Verbs

Same irregular stems as in the future tense.

  • Tenertendr-
    • Vos tendrías (You would have)
  • Poderpodr-
    • Vos podrías (You would be able)
  • Hacerhar-
    • Vos harías (You would do/make)

5.3. Usage and Examples

  • Vos viajarías más si tuvieras dinero. (You would travel more if you had money.)
  • Vos comerías sushi, pero no te gusta. (You would eat sushi, but you don’t like it.)
  • Vos vivirías en la montaña. (You would live in the mountains.)
